NEW YORK – Selendy & Gay has been recognized by Chambers and Partners, a leading legal industry publication, for the firm’s pathbreaking commitment to diversity.
Shortlisted for “The Most Pioneering Firm for Gender Diversity” award, the first of its kind in Chambers’ history, the Firm has been recognized for increasing the opportunities for, and representation of, female lawyers.
“Understanding that law firms are notoriously slow to change, the firm formed with the intention of shifting the law firm paradigm, by not only retaining top-flight women and men, but also training the next generation in a way that would also disrupt the long-standing obstacles that have suppressed women’s advancement, promotion, assignments and mentoring,” said David Flugman, Selendy & Gay’s Diversity Chair.
According to the 2018 Report on Diversity in U.S. Law Firms compiled by the National Association for Law Placement (NALP), 23% of law firm partners are women, as compared to 50% at Selendy & Gay. Additionally, while there is no reporting on the amount of equity these partners hold at their respective firms, Selendy & Gay is majority owned by women.
“For far too long, firms have been talking about the need to level the playing field for women, as though the structure itself wasn’t problematic,” Flugman added. “But the firm we’ve built and the resources we’ve put together, including business development training, were expressly designed to empower women at every stage of their careers.”
